The British Military Cemetery, Fayid, Suez Canal Zone, Egypt

Британското военно гробище във Файед е много, много впечатляващо. Земята, върху която се намира, е дарена от египетския народ, въпреки, че британците са недолюбвани тук, заради колонизацията. Създадено през юни 1941 г., последните погребения са извършени през 1955 г., но и до днес роднини на погребаните там воини го посещават. Дори има специален хотел, отстоящ недалеко, за тях. За поддръжката плаща Британското правителство, и всичко е перфектно- от окосената трева, до надписите на надгробните камъни. Погребани са не само християни, но и много мюсюлмани, а освен британци, има войници от Канада, Австралия, Нова Зеландия, Южна Африка, Индия, Западна и Източна Африка, Судан, Белгия, Гърция, Полша, Югославия, Германия.
Разхождайки се сред гробовете, ме налегнаха мисли за войните- колко животи са отнети, в името на какво- повечето погребани бяха почти деца, на 20- 24 години! Колко далеч са от Родините си, и колко ли смелост се иска да служиш на една кауза, каквато и да била тя. И как след толкова години Британия не забравя умрелите в нейно име.


Far away in a foreign land
They pitched their tents in the desert sand.
Oh, so young, were these brave men,
Never to see their homes again.
That heat, disease, and then the foe
Would take young Bill, and Fred and Joe.
Three long years this war went on,
So many souls were dead and gone.
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and civilians too,
Commonwealth troops, to name a few.
We will remember them with pride,
It was for all of us they died.

"The cemetery was opened in June 1941 for war burials from the numerous military hospitals in the area. It was planned by the military authorities for ultimate use as a garrison cemetery and was so used until Commonwealth forces finally withdrew from Egypt, the last burials being made in 1955. The cemetery contains 765 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 190 of which were brought in after the war from the remote Qassassin African Cemetery, where permanent maintenance would not have been possible. The non war graves, those of members of the forces, their dependents and civilian organisations attached to the garrison, number 616. There are also 440 war graves of other nationalities in the cemetery. At the far end of Fayid War Cemetery stands the FAYID MEMORIAL which commemorates 265 men from East Africa, West Africa, High Commission Territories, Palestine, Middle East Territories and Sudan, serving either in their own forces or in Commonwealth units, who died in non-operational zones of Egypt and whose graves, so situated that permanent maintenance was impossible, could not be moved to a war cemetery on national or religious grounds."
